Note Taking
Okay for starters, my note taking journey (at least on the pc) started with Neorg. While I did like Neorg, I didn't like when they introduced breaking changes, as far as my notes go I don't want to have to edit my neovim config all the time.
Enter Vimwiki, this is what I have been using for a few years until very recently. It is rather good and importantly stable but lacked one key feature that I thought I could live without but as it turned out I cant.
Obsidian
Portability is the thing I was missing, the ability to seamlessly take notes on my phone and have them be in sync with my pc and vice versa. I needed an easy to use app for my phone, I decided on Obsidian. I will be the first to admit that I have not been a fan of using non FOSS programs but on this occasion I have had to make an exception.
Obsidian has a very nice interface and a large selection of themes that are the same across devices, the settings and themes are stored in your note vault and are therefore able to be synced to other devices with ease.
Obsidian.nvim
I like Obsidians interface but I'm more at home using the terminal and Neovim, not to mention I do all my writing in neovim. It then makes sense to write my notes in the terminal also. Obsidian.nvim is an actively maintained fork of the original plugin by epwalsh.
The plugin integrates with Obsidian, allowing for easy note creation and management. "This plugin is not meant to replace Obsidian, but to complement it."
Syncthing
Obsidian does offer syncing for a price, however my way is free and really not hard to setup. I am using Syncthing on my pc and Syncthing Fork on my Android Phone.
A quirk with the syncthing fork app is that in order to add a folder that you have set to sync from another device, you need to open the web view from the hamburger menu.
To autostart it with systemd: (--now starts the service, so no need to run start also)
sudo systemctl syncthing@myusername.service --now
The Web interface can be accessed at:
http://127.0.0.1:8384
Be very aware when setting this up, if it is running and you accidentally delete something from your phone then its gone on your pc. Make sure to backup your files where syncthing cant touch.
Quartz (Bonus)
Quartz is a static-site generator that uses your Obsidian vault to create a website. It is a batteries included generator, meaning in order to run it at least in its simplest form, needs no coding skills.
I personally do not use this for my notes. I have used it as an experiment for my Community Wiki. I have documented all the changes I made to get it looking like I did (On its home page).
